IP Protection Ratings and the Role of 3D Printing
IP ratings (Ingress Protection) define how well an enclosure protects against the intrusion of foreign bodies and water. From IP20 (touch protection) to IP68 (dust-tight and permanently waterproof) — the requirements fundamentally determine the enclosure design of electronic devices.
Testing and validating these protection ratings requires highly precise test models. This is exactly where SLA 3D printing comes into play.
Why SLA for IP Test Models?
Stereolithography (SLA) is one of the most precise 3D printing processes. A UV laser cures liquid photopolymer resin layer by layer, achieving resolutions down to 25 micrometres.
Key Advantages for IP Models
- Highest dimensional accuracy — Tolerances in the range of ±0.05 mm enable precise fits for seals and closures
- Smooth surfaces — Minimal layer lines provide well-defined sealing surfaces
- Watertight parts — Fully cured resin is inherently waterproof
- Complex geometries — Fine sealing lips, snap-fit connections, and tight tolerances are achievable
Typical Application Scenarios
Electronics Enclosure Prototypes
Before investing in an injection mould, an SLA prototype of the housing can be manufactured and subjected to IP testing. This allows design weaknesses to be identified and corrected early.
Seal Validation
SLA models enable testing of various sealing concepts — O-ring grooves, lip seals, or labyrinth seals — without tooling changes.
Connectors and Cable Entries
Cable glands and plug connections often need to meet high IP protection ratings. SLA models reproduce these details with full fidelity.
IP Protection Ratings Overview
| Rating | Protection Against Foreign Bodies | Protection Against Water |
|---|---|---|
| IP54 | Dust protected | Splash water protected |
| IP65 | Dust-tight | Water jet protected |
| IP67 | Dust-tight | Temporary immersion |
| IP68 | Dust-tight | Continuous immersion |
